Exotic yarn from Wildweaves.co.uk

Exotic yarn from Wildfires of Oakham proved irresistible to spinners at SpinningSchool on tuesday- we were enthralled by Uday’s talk and video about the cooperative movement in his native Nepal – we saw a video of women harvesting nettles and retting, boiling and spinning the yarn which was on sale. He has a shop at 6 Market St, Oakham, Rutland LE15 6DYThe Nepalese women work to earn enough money to pay for their children to go to school.

Exotic fibre

They live in remote mountain areas and have absolutely nothing that doesn’t grow there. We were so inspired we donated a spinning wheel to them. Uday took delivery of it yesterday and says he will take it to pieces for transporting it – but we are wondering if we could raise the funds to ship it for him to the nearest point ready for transporting up the mountain. I am currently weaving some of these grey hemp, silk and wool mix yarn pictured here to make scarves for Christmas presents. The Banana yarn, pictured top left was very popular.

  1. Can I add to this? If anyone has an old spinning wheel that they feel is beyond repair, don’t want etc please would they donate it to this wonderful effort. Very inspiring work that they do in very harsh conditions. Thanks Frances

  2. If you are taking donations for the shipping, I’d be happy to contribute to something so worthwhile. I’m disappointed I couldn’t be there.

    1. Thank you very much Julie – will talk about it at Woolly Day on Saturday – be wonderful if we could raise enough to get the wheel – or even wheels – there!

  3. I have a wheel to donate to Uday. a worthwhile destination I think!
    Thanks to Pam for helping.:-)

    1. Thank you so much Liz – it will make such a difference to them – that is very generous of you – that makes two wheels in two weeks! lovely news
