Lunch with a Tudor Lady

You can meet this delightfully informative and entertaining visitor from the Tudor period at lunch time on 8th April at Loddington Visitor Centre* when provides a fun interlude to our learn to long draw workshop. Elizabeth will give a 45 minute talk; she arrives dressed in Tudor clothes with three baskets of ‘things’ along with her traditional drop spindle. The year is 1552 and she is over sixty years old and has experienced a lot of political and religious upheaval in her life. She talks about feasts and celebrations she has and her daily life all illustrated by the things in her basket; these include ingredients for making soap, a tinder box for fire, candles, ink and writing equipment. There is a book of receipts (recipes) for simples and home remedies. She also brings some ‘dangerous’ items such as a rosary and a printed book about her mother’s pilgrimage during the reign of Henry VII.  * Fee for talk only £5.00. We also have a genuine tudor candlestick in the display cabinet at the visitor centre which was discovered close by.

Elizabeth is happy to be interrupted with questions and will bring a Tudor lunch to share with us. Please note: she stays as Elizabeth while in role – but who knows, she may join us later as a contemporary spinner! Please feel free to invite friends who have never spun before-  anyone who has sheep, likes a good lunch or has an interest in history will enjoy the  day. They  can learn on the drop spindle  or a wheel, please bring their own wheel or spindle if you have one.

Programme: 10.30 coffee and cake. 11am Long Draw: talk/demonstrations on wheel and drop spindle, followed by practise (with help).
