A tremendous achievement for a pupil who first lesson took place just three weeks ago. She has also made a felted fox who looks very cosy hiding beneath the rosette. She chose an Ashford Joy wheel that folds up into a strong secure bag suitable for air freight, so that she can take it back to Japan when she returns. I am hopeful that Japan will soon have its first Long Draw Spinning teacher.

This happy lady recently received her rosette – a tremendous achievement in only five weeks and three lessons: Lesson 1 – long draw technique, Lesson 2 plying, Lesson 3 rolags and spinning a quality yarn. She started with my Beginners’ Pack on a traditional wheel. And worked at it! She then tried other wheels including the Kiwi and Joy. The Ashford Joy wheel ticked all the boxes! If ever a spinning wheel was well named it is the Joy 2. A joy to (2) spin on – I love my Joy. ‘Joy To the World’ as the tuneful Christmas carol goes (whoops – don’t mention Christmas, it is only August)

Spinning lessons make happy smiles as well as sumptuous yarn as this photo of my happy pupil shows. She is holding her first spinning which turned out much better than she expected – as I find it always does! First spinning is very important as it is the benchmark upon which to assess progress. Lesson 1 is to learn the technique of long draw: once that is mastered it is possible to spin almost anything – from yak with <1inch staple - to a long curly lock. Lesson 2 is to ply whatever the pupil can get onto two bobbins. On a scale of difficulty 1-10, learning long draw is 9.5, but learning to ply is about 2-3. All the hard work is over by then. And the plyed yarn always comes as a pleasant surprise to the beginner who thinks they have spun rubbish until they see it plyed...

Successful spinning lessons are a great joy to me. Another promising pupil is my neighbour who has her own sheep – she learned to spin on her first lesson. Like all my pupils, she learned to spin on Blue Faced Leicester (BFL) prepared tops. I always start beginners off on BFL as it is the easy to spin. Merino top is easy too, but to mind it is environmentally unacceptable to use something from the other side of the world, when there is as good as, or even better fibre on the doorstep.
My neighbour came for her refresher and plying lesson a week later on a Friday afternoon when I have a knitting group* and everyone there was very complimentary about her first spinning. It can be very reassuring see people react so positively to one’s work. For all my new pupil knew, I could have been just flattering her when I said her first work was very good but I never waste my time with flattery as everyone knows a fraud when they see it! When she saw for herself how the knitters responded with such pleasure and surprise to her first spinning – and very, successful spinning lesson – it was very positive affirming experience. All very pleasing and one of the reasons I so much enjoy what I do.

*Knitting is from 2-5pm in my studio and spills over into the house or gazebo as necessary. Any knitter, beginner or not, is welcome to come along regardless of if they are spinners. It is a great place for free help and advice and no fee other than a donation of £3 for tea.

Long draw spinner – the world has another one and she was awarded one of my ‘Long Draw Spinner’ rosettes for her skill. This lady made a three hour trip from Yorkshire to learn the ancient craft with me. It only took her an hour or so to master the skill using her own Ashford traditional wheel and then she proved her new found skill on the Great Wheel. Her husband, who is a weaver, took this photo. She is a very accomplished knitter and was wearing a lovely pullover and some seriously nice hand-knitted socks…

Long draw technique is the only way to spin on a Great wheel and to make things more difficult, the draw must be made using the left hand as the right hand is needed for turning the wheel. If people could do this in medieval times I can’t see why so many people think it is difficult today (I recently taught 12 members at the W. Essex guild meeting). This wheel is a replica of the one illustrated in the Luttrel Psalter C1330, which was commissioned by the Luttrel family who owned land near Stamford which is not far from where I live.

I begin to teach long draw by making a thread between two hands. Then we make a thread using a drop spindle – just turning the spindle by hand not necessarily spinning and dropping it.

Next I go on to a wheel and control the twist while the pupil draws the thread so they can begin to feel the plasticity as the fibres attenuate between our hands. It is only a matter of achieving the right balance between fibre and twist before one can feel this stretchiness – I call it the ‘chewing gum moment‘ – and make the long draw – a really satisfying way to spin that makes yarn in timescales to suit out busy lifestyle.

Spin long draw – life’s too short for anything less

great wheel

Great wheel at Fibre East. See my new great wheel on my stand in the Cotswold tent. I am now teaching long draw on the great wheel in my studio: £37.50 for 1.5 hours includes easy to spin fibre and instruction on how to ply straight from the spindle so spinners go home with at least one ball or yarn. To celebrate this, my first trade stand at Fibre East, I’m giving away 100 vouchers worth £5 each for SpinningSchool workshops, 1-1 tuition or Golden Fleece blending board, or the unique new table carder. Pick up a voucher on the Have a Go stand in Hebridean or on the stand in Cotswold.

Unfortunately she got on a train that didn’t stop at Market Harborough and got swept off to Luton – an 45 minute journey. By the time she got back to Harborough it was two hours later and she was not in the best mental state for a spinning lesson. But she had her lesson and I put her back on the train at Harborough carrying her borrowed wheel at 9pm. This picture was taken on her second lesson. Most of my pupils learn in the first two lessons. She was very pleased with her first spinning – its was brilliant. This first spinning was plyed and then skeined on the Kiwi Skeiner which is much quicker and easier to use than a giddy noddy. I took this picture in my studioon her second lesson. She was very happy and so was I. It is always a pleasure to teach someone young – I like to think that they will be still long draw spinning and inspiring others long after I’ve gone….what a joy.

Churro fleece is new to me. I was given a small sample of this fabulous fibre by Judith, one of my SpinningSchool ladies who had visited the Navajo reservation in the States earlier this year. I told my friend Gillian who lives in Phoenix, Arizona about it – she did a bit of research…as you do…and found Carol a lady who works tirelessly to get fair prices for the fleece and other products the Navajo Indians produce..she also came up with this magnificent photograph of a Churro sheep… This is Carol with one of the white ones

Am really inspired about the Churro fleece and can’t wait to get my hands on it! It comes in glorious colours including a Red Mesa which Carol tells me is a terracotta colour – there is also an Antique Grey, dark and light red Mesa and a dark chocolate brown. The trouble with applying words like ‘chocolate’ to fleece is that it becomes even more desirable and yummy – so I just have to have some….

Mary did very well with her new 70m Ashford spindle – she came with her Grandma who is spinning on her great aunts’ wheel. I like to encourage young people so children are free at Woolly day. Mike and Simon were both spinning rug yarn – and highly productive they were too!
