Silk Hankies workshop
12/01/2016 –10:30 - 17:00£25.00
Silk Hankies workshop, spinning and dyeing silk hankies is very easy and very satisfying as nothing takes dye like silk – just gorgeous in the true senses of the word. And spinning silk is easy as the filaments are long and don’t break so often. As this is January it may not be possible to get the dyed hankies dry enough to spin so spinning tuition will be with undyed silk hankies and the yarn can be dyed afterwards if necessary. Silk hankies are made from longer filaments than commonly found in silk bricks or rovings and need to be separated out in order to be manageable.
Hand-dyed singles are lovely when plyed with other fibre such as merino as, when spun correctly, silk adds lustre as well as colour which is very pleasing. No previous experience is necessary for this workshop and I have taught complete beginners (never sat at a wheel before) to spin silk in a weekend.
The dyed silk hankies make an excellent addition to a stash. The singles will keep – I kept some for nearly 20 years before deciding what to do with it. Playing with colour in January is very uplifting when the days are dull and nights are long and there is little colour to be seen in the garden or countryside. The luscious colours reflecting light are a great joy, especially when they have been mixed together and blend in the dyeing.
