Natural dye workshop: dyeing with weld, indigo, and madder with Judy Hardman. Judy is amusing, practical, straightforward and very inspiring. Dye your own handsup skeins under her expert tuition. Weld and Madder have been chosen for their excellent lightfast properties – as well as availability.
While skeins are mordanting we will do some indigo dyeing and later-on combine the weld and madder with indigo techniques for greens and purples. No previous experience necessary, but if you attended Judy’s courses in 2015 then please bring your sample cards for reference. We will be mordanting from the night before so if you wish to do this then please let me have your skeins in advance. Eight 25 gm undyed skeins – either bought or handspun will be sufficient – some undyed 25gm skeins will be available for sale if required. By using small skeins you will be able to choose whether to go for quantity or variety of colour. Further supplies of raw materials, seeds, mordants and Judy’s fabulous book on Natural Dyes – see below will be on sale.
Like me, Judy is a long draw spinner and has been spinning, weaving and dyeing for over thirty years – but unlike me she’s an expert on Natural Dyeing. Her new book ‘Natural Dyes’ is available on Amazon and signed copies will be on sale on the day. Natural Dyes describes how to dye with plants that can be grown in the garden or collected from the countryside; it is lavishly and delightfully illustrated by RHS medalist, Sally Pinhey with accurate and detailed botanical watercolours as well as photographs of yarn samples of the colours each plant produces. The book includes instructions on solar dyeing, step by step guide to dyeing wool, silk, cotton and felt in all its forms and gives five different garden designs using dye plants. It is published by Crowood.com at £14.99. Signed copies will be available on the day.
