Every spinner has their own journey of discovery as to what makes them happy with their spinning. Sharing the ups and downs of your recent learning experience with other ‘travellers’ can be very enlightening – as well as highly entertaining! We always have a good laugh.
As my pupils know, it does not take long to learn to make a yarn – first skien of spinning in the second lesson is normal – and then comes a lifetime of discovering new ways of making yarn… Fibre choice, spinning technique, colour and colour skills, yarn structure and that little bit of magic – inspiration- are all choices to be made. The options are infinite, so why stick on a treadmill of two ply and risk getting bored once the novelty of your first spinning wears off?
Spinners are uniquely creative yarn designers whether then know it or not.
Mentoring days help open up ideas as one draws on the experience of others. It is not about copying – although that is often a springboard for your own new ideas – but about finding your own unique style and what brings you joy in spinning. I enjoy learning too and as time goes on am convinced I have learned more from my pupils than they have learned from me. Every spinner is unique and deserves the satisfaction and fulfilment hand spinning offers and a studio full of people who like what you like is a good place to discover it.
